| The boom in electronic commerce has increased the number of trips for distribution tasks, which translates into greater risks related to road safety | Two out of every three fatal workplace accidents are from traffic The Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (ISSL), under the Ministry of Employment, Research and Universities, has given an 'online' seminar in which professionals from this body have taught how to prevent traffic accidents in the workplace.
During this training, aimed at professionals in the prevention of companies in the Region, the most common risk factors were studied in depth and the results of research on this type of accident were analyzed. One of the factors analyzed was the increase in trips for distribution tasks, due to the rise of electronic commerce as a result of the pandemic.
Thus, it was stressed that the progressive increase in online sales parallels an increase in traffic-related risks. Traffic accidents at work represent approximately 12 percent of the total accident rate in the Region of Murcia.
In addition, of the total number of fatal workplace accidents, two out of three are traffic accidents, making their prevention particularly relevant. The ISSL technicians emphasized the importance of integrating the prevention of occupational traffic accidents in the global management of occupational risks of the company, through measures such as mobility plans and road safety.
Other recommended measures in this field were to analyze the mobility of workers, their movements, the duration of these journeys and their main road problems. The general director of Social Dialogue and Labor Well-being, Purificación Cuadrupani, stressed that "it is necessary to establish continuous training actions, and guarantee safety in company vehicles.
At the same time, the company must promote compliance with traffic regulations, especially in aspects such as distractions, tiredness or driving times.
