Totana City Council is going to request its inclusion in the Temporary Hunting Area for rabbits and the establishment of measures to reduce the populations of wild rabbit (oryctolagus cuniculus), declared by the Ministry of Employment, Universities, Employment and Environment of the Autonomous community.

This week they met in the technical plenary hall of this regional department in order to inform municipal officials and representatives of associations of hunters and farmers of the municipality about the study and actions arising from the order on measures for the prevention of damage caused by the proliferation of rabbits.

In this meeting were present the mayor, Andrés García, the first deputy mayor, Juan José Cánovas, and the councilor for the Environment, Antonia Camacho, together with municipal technicians in order to consult the agrarian organizations, the federated hunting societies and the environmental groups and associations and protectors of the nature of the municipality.

This procedure was initiated at the request of the Paretón Cazadores Society and the COAG-IR in Totana.

The order of March 5, 2019 was intended, in accordance with Article 45 of Law 7/2003 of Hunting and Fishing Fluvial of the Region of Murcia, the initial declaration of Temporary Hunting Region by rabbits, the municipal terms of Abanilla , Archena, Fortuna and Molina de Segura in these areas.

In addition, at the request of other affected town halls, other municipalities could be included in said declaration, when there are significant damages affecting more than 30 owners and there is a density of 10 rabbits per hectare.

Said inclusion would be adopted, at the proposal of the General Directorate of the Natural Environment, following a report from the Office of Socioeconomic Promotion of the Environment.

Those interested and the City Council must now work on the location of the land where there is damage, the relationship of means to be used in the control of these, the schedule and calendar of actions and the list of companies and people who will apply the control measures.

To the meeting to study the possibility of requesting such a declaration, the Hunters Society of Sana Eulalia, the Hunters Society of El Rayón, the Paretón Hunters Society, the El Arruí Hunters Society, the agricultural unions COAG-IG and ASAJA were summoned. , the Culture and Environmental Association PACHAMAMA and the Association for the Promotion of Biodiversity and Sustainable Use in the surroundings of Sierra Espuña AFOBIA, Local Police and Seprona.
