The City of Totana collaborates tomorrow October 26 in the organization of the "I Conference of Alternatives to Herbicides in Public Spaces", held in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Murcia, in the Campus of Espinardo;

and in which more sustainable and less polluting alternatives to chemical herbicides will be discussed and analyzed.

The Plenary of Totana approved in May 2016 a motion in this regard, encouraging public administrations to make use of ecological and non-toxic proposals in urban environments and public spaces.

The Councilor for Environment, Antonia Camacho, and municipal technicians of the Parks and Gardens area will participate tomorrow in this event, Totana being one of the three municipalities of the Region of Murcia where express support was given to this type of initiatives less toxic as city free of herbicides.

The mayor Antonia Camacho explained that "this is a context in which we seek the most sustainable development of our public spaces, and it is important that we raise a more respectful option with the environment and our neighbors, hence we bet for ecological alternatives and not toxic. "

"It is a model that we have to change little by little, taking sustainability and ecology, and when we start this process will be better for our public spaces," said the councilor.

The day brings together professionals from different sectors, such as environmental health, biodiversity or management of green spaces, among others, to establish networks to improve urban environments.

The Consistory totanero ratifies the support to this cause and to that encounter, giving rise, as already demonstrated last year, to a motion on the study and taking into consideration the prohibition of chemical herbicides for non-agricultural uses in spaces of public use and substitution by non-chemical methods.

Since the World Health Organization, WHO, in 2015 declared glyphosate, the active principle of most herbicides, as possibly carcinogenic, many municipalities have limited or banned it in public spaces in their municipalities, such as Santomera, Totana and Molina de Segura.

This first Free Day, held at the Social Center of the Espinardo Campus, aims to demonstrate that there are other options for the use of herbicides in public spaces, which do not harm the health or welfare of citizens.

For this, there will be different presentations of experts in Botany, environmental health or landscape, who will expose their experiences.

Likewise, a space will be dedicated to the experience of the Barcelona City Council, which was the first to bet on the alternatives suggested by the WHO.
