The mayor summons a Board of Spokespersons that agrees to raise a joint motion to the plenary session in December expressing the institutional rejection of the ministerial decision not to transfer water for irrigation

The mayor, Juan José Cánovas, today convened an extraordinary session of the Board of Spokespersons in which it has been agreed to raise a joint motion expressing the institutional rejection of the City Council of Totana to the decision of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition not to transfer water to the irrigation in the month of December.

In addition, in the same proposal of all five municipal groups, it is decided to support the claims promoted by the Central Union of Irrigators of the Tajo-Segura Transfer, the Irrigation Communities and agricultural and irrigation organizations of the Region of Murcia.

According to the motion drafted, the decision to close the Tajo-Segura Transfer, not transferring water for irrigation in December despite having the favorable report of the Central Commission for the Operation of the Aqueduct, entails a pernicious and very serious situation;

and it translates into a significant damage to the situation of agriculture and the economic and social development of Totana.

From the different Public Administrations of the Region of Murcia we cannot allow anyone with a single partisan end to end up with an infrastructure that has united so many autonomous communities and that has led both Spanish Levante and the Castilla-La Mancha area so much, Murcia and Andalusia, indicates the proposal.

"From the City Council of Totana we want to make our demands of the farmers of Totana and the whole of the Region of Murcia, who do not understand what they have done to always be aware of the decisions of the ministers on duty; so it is time to defend them again since all Spanish territories have the right to enjoy a common good such as water, "he says.

The same agreement states that "we consider this ministerial decision to be a mistake, which is also very negative and detrimental to the interests of the farmers of the Region of Murcia and to the Murcian countryside in general."

"It is unheard of that the Transfer has the capacity to transfer water for human consumption and does not do so for irrigation; therefore, we are going to support seamlessly all the actions and mobilizations promoted during the next weeks from the Central Irrigation Union, the communities of irrigators and the regional agrarian organizations, "he continues.

The same motion indicates that "Murcia farmers have progressively strived to maintain an economic model based on sustainable and controlled agriculture despite the scarce existing water resources, and that these do not have severe consequences on the environment, for what to argue exclusively that the ecological disaster of the lagoon, which has special protection as a natural site, has its origin in this situation is to completely ignore the social and economic reality of the Region of Murcia. "

"This decision, together with the delay of several weeks of the meeting of the Commission, can also cause a great discouragement in the farmers, a very worrying situation, since the irrigators have to plan their crops and do not know what flows are going to count ", as they have gathered in the proposal.

"The argument that the rainfall that has been recorded this month is having important consequences in the area of the Campo de Cartagena, significantly affecting the post-transfer infrastructure, which is what allows the regulation, transport and final distribution of water to the different receiving watering areas do not seem to be sufficient or convincing for agricultural organizations, "concludes the motion that will be discussed on Monday in the regular session.
