Totana City Council, through Councillors for Environment and Tourism, participates in the development of "European Charter for Sustainable Tourism Espuña Regional Park and its environment", whose project is supported by the Directorate General for Environment the Ministry of the Presidency.

The European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (CETS) is a proposal to effectively advance the principles of sustainable tourism in protected natural areas (PNA).

The CETS was developed by European representatives of the protected areas and tourism businesses, and establishes the principles of sustainable tourism in these areas and how to apply in the territory.

The system of accession to the CETS is a voluntary agreement commits the signatories: ENP managers, tourism operators and other local stakeholders to implement a local strategy for sustainable tourism.

The Councillor for Environment, Maria Jose Bedia, explained that the membership has allowed this project to promote awareness and support for protected natural areas, in this case the mountains of Spain, which is a fundamental part of our natural and cultural heritage , and therefore should be preserved for the enjoyment of current and future generations.

In addition, Bedia has said he wants to direct towards sustainable management and tourism development in the regional park, that is, to reconcile the preservation of local values ​​to the satisfaction of the aspirations of employees, the expectations of visitors and the needs of local people.

Under this project, will involve all parties concerned with tourism in the protected area and its environment, management and tourism development of the area and will develop and implement a sustainable tourism strategy and a plan Action for this protected area.

The mayor added that, above all, which also seeks to protect and promote the natural and cultural heritage of the area for tourism and tourism, avoiding excessive tourism development that would endanger their preservation, seeking benefits for the park, its users and entrepreneurs in the area.
