In the coming weeks, standards and measures will be dictated with the aim of reducing water consumption in the municipality around 15% to cope with the situation of extreme drought and avoid cuts or drops in network pressure

The City of Totana will not increase the price of drinking water in the coming months in this municipality after knowing the measures that the direction of Mancomunidad de Canales del Taibilla (MCT) has planned to undertake in the coming months to address the drought.

Yesterday was held the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the Commonwealth of Taibilla Channels in its facilities of the Sierra de la Espada in Molina de Segura, which were attended by municipalities and joint agencies that supplies.

On the part of the City Council of Totana, the first deputy mayor, Juan José Cánovas, attended.

A meeting marked the situation of extreme drought in which measures were not contemplated tending to the increase of tariffs reason why the City council of Totana will maintain the present ones, "not raising the receipt to families and livestock facilities", according to Juan José Cánovas.

During the presentation of the economic balance before the Board of Directors, both the director of the MCT, Carlos Conradi, and the president of the entity, Adolfo Gallardo De Marco, publicly highlighted and acknowledged the efforts of the Totana City Council, which had an accumulated debt of 8 million euros in June 2015 and has gone down to less than 2 million at present, being up to date on monthly payments.

"These are the results of the seriousness and effort during these years, within the framework of the Adjustment Plan," said Juan José Cánovas, representing Totana.

Another issue of vital importance addressed in the conclave was the urgent need to reduce consumption by 15%, which is 35 hm3 in the year, to cope with the severe situation of drought that affects the entity managing the water supply in the area of Murcia and Alicante.

Canovas promised to present a battery of measures in the coming days in this objective, among which include limiting consumption in irrigation and gardens or washing of vials;

restriction in the filling of swimming pools for private use, hose washing in vehicles, limitations in domestic consumption in rural areas and other measures that meet the objective of saving and avoid cuts or pressure reductions in the networks at night.

The performance of the Water Service in Totana continues to be worrisome due to the lack of investment and the scarce technical and human resources, as well as the breach of the Pluriannual Investment Plan promised by all the Parliamentary Groups in the Regional Assembly, according to the first lieutenant of mayor.

However, the Water Department remains firm in the purpose of improving yields, reducing losses in networks and maintaining the public nature of the Water Service, with the aim of complying with the measures contemplated in the Adjustment Plan, approved in Plenary and the approval of the Ministry of Finance.
