Municipal authorities, public employees and residents of Totana today kept a minute of silence at the doors of the Consistory totanero as a sign of repulsion and condemnation of the latest case of gender-based violence in the Canarian hamlet of Cartagena, where a 20-year-old girl died stabbed to the hands of alleged ex-wife, after reporting hours before her exnovio by harassment.

The mayor, Andrés García, the first deputy mayor, Juan José Cánovas, and numerous representatives of the municipal corporation have concentrated as a protest signal condemning the crime and have shown their condolences to the family.

The alleged murderer, who an hour before the attack had been accused of harassment by the victim, was arrested and detained by agents of the Local Police of Cartagena when he was hiding in a house adjacent to the place of the events in his attempt to escape.

This is the third victim of gender violence so far this year in the Region of Murcia and 37 in the national level.

The first totanero mayor has condemned the murder and has appealed to the unity of all "to work together to eradicate sexist violence, with a commitment from society to fight against this social scourge." In addition, the councilman has advocated the central and regional governments "to strengthen mechanisms to combat gender-based violence, with a special focus on prevention, sensitization and protection of victims."

In addition, students from the "Conciliation from a gender perspective" course, which is taking place at the Local Development Center of Totana, financed by the European Social Fund and coming from different municipalities in the Guadalentín region, kept a minute of silence for the same reason.
