In order to know the services and agricultural innovation projects

The Mayor of Totana, Juan José Canovas, recently visited the Center for Soil Science and Applied Biology Segura (CEBAS), the Higher Centre for Scientific Research (CSIC), based in Murcia, in order to know the services and projects agricultural innovation.

The visit was guided and was accompanied by Dr. agronomist, totanero Pedro Martinez Gomez, who explained the mayor research work made in the various facilities and laboratories of the center.

The councilman could see first hand the departments of soil and water conservation and management of organic waste, irrigation, plant nutrition, stress biology and plant pathology, plant breeding and food science and technology.

CEBAS-CSIC has been organizing guided tours of laboratories and departments of the CSIC, preceded by a general presentation and projection of audiovisual, aiming visits is to present the different departments as well as major research activities.

This activity aims to encourage interest in science and its application in the food industry as well as showing how a research center and the various activities that take place inside is organized.

This is included within the initiatives proposed by the CEBAS-CSIC to bring innovation and benefits of research emerge within the food industry, one of the most important in the region of Murcia.

What is the CEBAS-CSIC?

CEBAS-CSIC aims to contribute, through research, to generate the knowledge necessary to develop strategies to achieve sustainability of the fragile resources existing in semiarid areas, managing them properly and making it possible in such an environment, the development of agriculture obtaining quality and healthy and safe plant foods.

Increased knowledge generated makes it possible to contribute to decision-making as regards the necessary rules to implement actions and policies in this regard.

In addition, research helps to address important problems such as water shortages, provide a better environment (reduced greenhouse, soil conservation and vegetation, organic matter), ensure sustainable agriculture, producing food quality and health benefits, and thus contribute to the socio-economic and environmental progress for future generations.

CEBAS is an institute of singular research because it is a multidisciplinary center that conducts research in three scientific techniques-related areas (Agricultural Sciences, Science and Food Technology, and Resources), which work with the necessary autonomy but within a common bond such as the Centre itself.

In addition, conduct research work in all three areas, but in the environment of an area with scarce resources such as the Region of Murcia, promotes continuous generation of knowledge should take advantage of.

Therefore, this center advocates remain a regional and national reference, and get to reach the level of international reference in terms of research related to the development of quality agriculture, and technological treatments to obtain plant foods healthy, safe and attractive to consumers in areas with fragile resources, respecting in particular the conservation of soil and water.

CEBAS want to consolidate as a "center of excellence" within the CSIC, exploiting its ability to generate and transfer knowledge through research in three key areas (Resources, Agricultural and Food), which aims to contribute to the sustainability of existing resources ( soil and water), without sacrificing the performance of quality agriculture, plant able to get quality and safe food that provide health and wellness to consumers.
