The Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment, in collaboration with municipalities and entities involved, has drawn a roadmap to improve the management of the Regional Park of Sierra Espuņa to the increased demand for public use and the impacts on paths and tracks the set of recreational and sports activities.

This initiative also the Commonwealth Tourism Services Espuņa and municipalities that brings this entity, in this case, Totana, Alhama de Murcia, Aledo, Pliego and Mula are immersed.

To this end, they planned a series of meetings throughout this year with experts and representatives athletes Group "Responsible Cycling" in Sierra Espuņa in order to reach a consensus on the various actions to be undertaken.

According to the findings of an evaluation report conducted between 2013 and 2015, mountain biking is one of the most intense activities performed in the paths of Sierra Espuņa.

These activities are causing the increase in the width of the trails and, above all, the creation of parallel paths and shortcuts fall line (zigzags or between forks).

In this situation, the convenience of working to reduce the impacts that activities occurring in the protected space arises.

Totana City Council has already acceded in 2013 to the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (CETS);

and in 2016 the renewal of membership and the development of a new strategy and action plan for the next five years in the regional park Espuņa was addressed.

Currently, it is working on contributions to the strategy and action plan 2017-2021 CETS Park, whose analysis and reflection will help define new objectives and actions to be connected with the challenges and opportunities of the territory.
