The mayor, Juan José Canovas, has expressed his condolences and solidarity with Ecuador and fellow residents originating in Totana country after the earthquake of magnitude 7.8 on the Richter scale occurred last weekend in the Ecuadorian coast.
The earthquake has stopped for the moment, at least 238 dead and over 1,600 injured, in addition to numerous and important material damage, many of them still unevaluated.
The mayor has communicated by telephone with the Consul of Ecuador in Murcia, Cecilia Erique Sarango, who has sent a message of solidarity of the Municipal Corporation, on behalf of the people of Totana, and condolences to the victims and loved ones after this terrible natural disaster and early recovery of the injured.
In addition, the alderman, who has expressed dismay at the terrible consequences of the earthquake, has sent a letter to the consul in these same terms to submit it to the ambassador of Ecuador in Spain, Miguel Calahorrano, and the own president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa.
Similarly, the Mayor of Totana has conveyed to the consul its institutional offer of help by making available means the City Council to work with families in Totana residents who have suffered in some way or another the consequences of the event.
"In Totana share the pain and grief of those who lost family and loved ones as a result of this catastrophe, and we hope a speedy recovery of all those affected," he said in the letter.
It is also added that "Totana, which is a demonstrably united people, is more fully right now before this terrible ordeal and in these difficult times."
Totana has a large colony of citizens of Ecuadorian origin, totanera fully integrated in society, which now exceeds the figure of 3,000 residents.
